MARCH 2023

GET READY TO HIKE FOR SOCIAL JUSTICE May 19-21!

Greetings Friends:

Last year on the hiking trail, we were excited to meet LVCers that had not engaged in a while, and church groups that had never engaged. This year, we need your help to bring out even more folks in support of LVC's social justice fellowships. Start getting your alumni, church, and supporter groups together to hike, walk, or even stroll for justice the weekend of May 19-21. For our big fundraiser of the year, we need hike leaders for LVC program cities, and other locations where YOU are. Let us know you can lead one! Look for the online hike-a-thon registration platform in the April e-news.

LVC HIKE-A-THON: CALL FOR HIKE LEADERS

For our inaugural hike-a-thon last year, we hosted hikes in 10 cities! Let's double that for year two, the weekend of May 19-21, 2023. Please RESPOND to lead the hike in your city, including our program cities of Baltimore, DC, and Minneapolis. Just email us, and we'll include you in the planning.  And THANK YOU IN ADVANCE!

FEATURING ASHEVILLE, NC HIKE!

Our featured hike this year is in Montreat, NC, most likely on a Graybeard Trail, and led by LVC alum Bethany Malley '03. We have about 122 LVC supporters in the state of North Carolina, and we hope all of them will join us! Look for details in the days ahead.

"Life in Montreat is lived at a slower, more peaceful pace.  There is no commercial development in Montreat, not even a traffic light.  Most of the streets are narrow and winding, with much less vehicle traffic than larger towns or cities.  This is an advantage to the town's preferred method of travel - walking.  Multiple trails wind through hundreds of acres of wilderness surrounding the Town, along creeks, across rustic bridges and through preserved woodland areas."

CAN YOU HOUSE AN LVC FELLOW FOR DC?

LVC housing works best when it is connected to an LVC supporter, because of their understanding of program goals, and housing offered at less than market rate. If you have affordable housing (rental house or rooms) for DC fellows for August 2023, alert us asap!

  • RENT/HOUSE OR STIPEND/ROOMS
  • In DC, MD, or VA
  • August 2023-July 2024
  • 1-3 fellows in a room, or 3-6 in a house
  • public transportation accessible to downtown DC
  • separate room and bath
  • neat and clean space, furnished would be a plus

PROGRAM DAY SPEAKER: HUMAN DIGNITY

We were pleased to have Leon Dixon, new Executive Director of Redeemer Center for Life in Minneapolis, MN, as our program day presenter for March. Redeemer has been an ongoing Placement and housing partner, with a brief hiatus.  Leon focused Volunteers on the importance of engaging from the lens of human dignity over DEI, and instead of entering service as a savior of the marginalized.

ALUMNI/SUPPORTER NEEDED FOR TABLING IN RAMSEY, MN

Are you an LVC alum or supporter that can represent LVC by tabling at the Minneapolis Area Synod Assembly, at Lord of Life in Ramsey on Saturday, April 29? We'll send you talking points and flyers. If you're available, let us know by March 20th.
