APRIL 2022

Dear Friends:

It's high time we got outside! Together!

You've been hearing about LVC's inaugural hike-a-thon, and it's now time to pull your team together and sign up.  To help you join a group for your hike weekend, meet the LVCers stepping up and out to get you moving on some of the greatest parks, trails, and routes from coast to coast.  Whether you JOIN ONE OR SUPPORT ONE, we're asking all hikers to sign up HERE. Unable to hike?  You can still donate on the hike site to support the campaign. Keep up with hike updates on LVC's web page HERE. Questions? Please e-mail Shae Agee.

CA/Los Angeles: Sunday, May 22, 11:00am

As the chair of the LVC Board of Directors, I'm excited to lead the inaugural hike, and kick off an annual celebration of LVC values: serve for a year, commit for a lifetime. Meet me, Branden Grimmett, at the Bear Statue at Griffith Park at the corner of Los Feliz Blvd and Fern Dell Drive. I'll carry the LVC flag for the west coast!

DC/Washington: TBD

As a new Washingtonian, and new LVC program manager for the East, I can't tell you how thrilled I am to meet and host local LVC supporters on the DC hike in Rock Creek Park! We need alumni to come out in full strength for the current Volunteers we hope to bring along to meet you, and other regional supporters. Join me, Meghan Brown Saavedra, in Rock Creek on hike weekend.

DE/Wilmington: Sunday, May 22, 2:00pm

The Wilmington hike will take place at the Wilmington Riverfront, beginning and ending at the Delaware Environmental Education Center, an LVC placement. The hike is a great way to raise money to support the volunteers in Wilmington and for local LVC supporters to enjoy time outdoors together and learn more about LVC. Join me, Heidi Beck and the Wilmington Local Support Network, for the opportunity to be in-person again.

MA/Boston: Sunday, May 22, 10:30 am - 4:00 pm

So, there are LVC supporters in the Boston area! Boston is known as "The Walking City," so join me, Barry Friswold, for the hike I'm leading starting on the South End, then moving on through Trinity Church, Beacon Hill, Long Wharf, and back to South End.  You can visit my hike page HERE.

IL/Chicago: Ideas welcome!

Alumni and friends are still here in Chicago! And ready to demonstrate our commitment to LVC community.  Any suggestions for stunning places to go hiking in and near Chicago? Join me, Juliana Glassco, as I lead a hike -- date, place, and time TBD -- to bring us all together again.

MD/Baltimore: Sunday, May 22, 4:00pm

A group of us from the Baltimore Local Support Network met on Zoom to discuss how Baltimore can support LVC and Volunteers by taking it to the streets (or hills). We chose Druid Hill Park, one of Baltimore's signature parks on 745 acres with recreational amenities galore, and something for everybody. We're inviting our current Volunteers to join us because, after all, it's all about them. Join me, Kirsten Mathisen, and Baltimore supporters on May 22.

MN/MINNEAPOLIS #1: Saturday, May 21, 11:00am

We're Katie and Jeremy Schroeder, an alumni family leading "hike-and-play" at Wabun Park in Minneapolis. We'll do the 1.75 mile loop, starting at the great little walk from the bridge just down from Minnehaha Falls (not AT the falls), a short loop down to the Mississippi River and back, and end at the playground at Wabun Park for adult hangout and kid play time. There's free parking at the Wabun playground.

I am supporting LVC through this hike because my time in LVC was transformational. The people I met through LVC -- my housemates, my colleagues, members of my local support congregation, other LVC alumni, LVC staff -- taught me how to navigate through the world as an adult who cares about the world, community, and connection. I draw on my LVC experience regularly still. I hope others join us on our family-friendly hike in South Minneapolis for a chance to reconnect with other LVC friends and alumni. I hope people give to support LVC through this hike so that LVC continues to be around to support future LVCers who are searching for their vocation to live intentionally and thoughtfully in the world.

MN/Minneapolis #2: Saturday, May 21, 10:30am

Twin Cities supporters have two hikes to choose from! I'm Rachel Kennedy, LVC program manager for Twin Cities, and I'm leading a 1.67 mile hike around Lake Como, or any distance hikers wish to trek. We'll meet in front of the Lakeside Pavilion (1360 Lexington Pkwy N Saint Paul, MN 55103). This will be an informal and flexible gathering of LVC Supporters, not an event sponsored by the lake/city; nor will there be any formal programming. Hikers can go as a group, at their own pace, or break off from the group's path around the lake. The view will be lovely!

NE/Omaha: Saturday, May 21, 9:00am

Did you know that LVC provides support for our volunteers and placement sites in Omaha, and all other cities?  We think Hike-a-Thon Team Omaha can raise funds to help the national effort to support us locally.  Form a team or donate to the “Omaha” page and then come out to Standing Bear Lake Park for a walk around the lake.  We’ll meet at the main sign in the Fort Street parking lot.  Come have some local fun while supporting our national efforts to build community and work for justice. Meet me, Scott Glaser (LVC program manager for Omaha), at Fort Street parking lot at Standing Bear Lake Park

WV/Harper's Ferry: Saturday, May 21

Dick Rortvedt (pictured) and Andrew McIlroy have been rolling around the idea of a hike at Rolling Ridge, a site Luther Place Memorial Church -- where both are members and where LVC has its founding and office -- uses for retreats near the historic town of Harper's Ferry. Rolling Ridge supports community, nature, and soul, all elements we embrace as we all rejoin in-person.  Join Dick and Andrew on what promises to be a wonderful hike in a much appreciated hiking region, miles from the hustle and bustle of Washington, DC.
