IMMIGRATION UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL For over 80 years, Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service (LIRS) has resettled refugees, reunited families, and rekindled dreams, committed to finding welcoming communities. LIRS's New American Cities program emphasizes economic empowerment, social mobility, and diverse, inclusive communities through a three-prong system: pathway building, career navigation, and harnessing the power of champions and coalitions. LVC Volunteer, Hallie Millsaps from Kentucky (left in photo), now living in LVC's Baltimore, MD community, has seen a world of activity and opportunity, most recently representing LIRS in its public-facing role at the National Immigrant Inclusion Conference. Hallie shares her thoughts: "My experience at Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service (LIRS) has presented me with what, I feel, is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Not only have I amassed transformative professional growth but I’ve been able to build a strong educational foundation centered around my areas of interest, that is, immigration. Thanks to Lutheran Volunteer Corps (LVC) I was able to take full advantage of serving and establishing my place at LIRS! LVC isn’t just a service year program, for me, but it is a testament that requires me to understand that my call to serve should very well continue beyond this service year."
