DDEDECEMBER 2022

DECEMBER  19, 2022

Checking in again, Friends!

This holiday season, consider what made you intentional about justice issues.

Over the last few years, LVC applicants have rated their top justice issues as immigration, law, and legal justice. Staff seek out Placements with these missions to meet applicant interests and offer unmatchable learning and leadership experiences unavailable elsewhere. Sample this year's Volunteer experience at one of our immigration partners, Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service in Baltimore, MD.

IMMIGRATION UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL

For over 80 years, Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service (LIRS) has resettled refugees, reunited families, and rekindled dreams, committed to finding welcoming communities. LIRS's New American Cities program emphasizes economic empowerment, social mobility, and diverse, inclusive communities through a three-prong system: pathway building, career navigation, and harnessing the power of champions and coalitions.

LVC Volunteer, Hallie Millsaps from Kentucky (left in photo), now living in LVC's Baltimore, MD community, has seen a world of activity and opportunity, most recently representing LIRS in its public-facing role at the National Immigrant Inclusion Conference. Hallie shares her thoughts:

"My experience at Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service (LIRS) has presented me with what, I feel, is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Not only have I amassed transformative professional growth but I’ve been able to build a strong educational foundation centered around my areas of interest, that is, immigration.

Thanks to Lutheran Volunteer Corps (LVC) I was able to take full advantage of serving and establishing my place at LIRS! LVC isn’t just a service year program, for me, but it is a testament that requires me to understand that my call to serve should very well continue beyond this service year."

When you give -- at any amount -- you support Hallie, and a second Volunteer at LIRS, Pablo (second from right in photo), and the social justice work they are already doing in the LVC program.

Donate now, and make this your holiday legacy for 2022.

Not an LVC donor yet or lapsed in support? You can start now at just $10 per month. It's a great way to support your favorite mission.

AND...

CLOSED FOR THE HOLIDAYS   Nonprofits do emotionally challenging work without 9-5 working hours. To give LVC's hard-working staff time for themselves and their families, the office will be closed December 19 - January 2. We look forward to engaging with you in the New Year, and Happy Holidays!

RENT THE DC HOUSE   For an affordable rent by Washington, DC standards, you can rent the house at 1323 Staples St NE, 20002 for $2,900.  View pictures and details HERE, and contact Deirdre Bagley if interested.

LVC BOARD AND COMMITTEES   You can still submit your candidacy for LVC's Board of Directors, and for working committees, as a great way to get more involved. APPLY HERE.
