MAY 2023

Friends:

Your multi-state hiking itinerary awaits! Sign up now for LVC's 2nd annual community fundraiser, and pick your city and hike. SIGN UP to hike or support your region's hikers (see sign up instructions at the end of this e-news); and visit LVC's hike web page HERE for the most updated details. Hikers pay $20, and everyone can donate to this great cause. Now, to hike all states in a day...

WASHINGTON, DC

SATURDAY, MAY 20, 11:00am.  Join volunteers from LVC's Bon House '23 as they lead a beautiful spring hike through the famed U.S. National Aboretum. Established in 1927 by an act of Congress, now on 451 acres over 9.5 miles, it's a must-do on everyone's life checklist. Prepare by accessing the plant finder and interactive map -- botanical explorer -- to help you identify species to excite gardeners and researchers.

BALTIMORE, MD

SUNDAY, MAY 21, 2:00pm. Wyman Park has 16 acres of winding paths, lawn, playgrounds and monuments, as well as places to picnic and ping-pong. It's an oasis for unwinding and on Sunday, a path for hiking. Meet organizer Kirsten Noplos and Simunye House '23 volunteers at Upper Field.

BOSTON, MA

SATURDAY, MAY 20, 10:00am. The Arnold Arboretum at Harvard University is a museum of trees teaching the world about plants. There are in fact 15,000 accessioned plants, wildlife sightings, and guided tours, enough to entice you to make the drive from neighboring areas into town. For "portals of wonder and welcome," join second-time hike leader Barry Friswold '85 and others at the main entrance for the day's adventure.

WILMINGTON, DE

The Big Reveal for Wilmington's hike is... coming soon!

ASHEVILLE, NC

SATURDAY, MAY 20, 8:00am.  The Graybeard Mountain trail in Montreat, NC has about 1,500 ratings on hike site Alltrails with a 4.5 star rating. The beauty of Asheville as a hiking destination will hopefully draw out alumni in the state, and those wanting to circle back with Bethany Malley '03 to reminisce about old-school LVC days. Meet at the trailhead parking lot to reconnect with friends and get out there.

ATLANTA, GA

SATURDAY, MAY 20, 10:00a-12:00p.  Piedmont Park’s reputation as Atlanta’s central urban oasis might be underrated. The rolling hills and unending trails support the hype, but there are also more than enough attractions packed into the 200-acre green space just north of Downtown. Meet LVC director Shae Agee at the trailhead, then plan your things to do around the hike to make a day of it. No need to fly into Atlanta for the fun if you don't live in the state -- organize a hike in your own hometown.

BOYCE, VA

SATURDAY, MAY 20, 10:00am. Be amazed by 172 acres of labeled shrubs and trees from all over the world, at the State Arboretum of Virginia, Blandy Experimental Farm at 400 Blandy Farm Rd. in Boyce, VA. We hope to have a vigorous hike, then double back for leisurely exploration. Children accompanied by a parent, and dogs on a leash, are welcome. Meet at the information booth a short walk from the parking area. Organized by Deirdre Bagley.
